Time for a Check-up

In order to be able to enjoy life, we have to stay as healthy as possible. This means leading a healthy lifestyle by eating well and exercising regularly… both of which can actually be enjoyed!

However, what most of us don’t realise is that regular medical check-ups are essential as they can detect any irregularity and, hence, health problems can be addressed immediately. Early detection of any health problem is of utmost importance, nevertheless, most people don’t have a check-up carried out until they start feeling symptoms that something is wrong. Why this should be is incomprehensible in most cases; we take our children for regular check-ups when they are young, so why don’t adults keep a regular eye on their own health throughout their lives?

Obviously, check-ups are imperative for anybody who is aware of the fact that they have a family history of a potentially serious disease (cancer, heart disease, etc.) but it is important for everybody to take care and have regular check-ups.  Doctors recommend that healthy people in their 40s should have a check-up every 2-3 years and that, once 50, the check-ups should take place annually.

Medicine is there to cure illnesses but to avoid the endurance of an illness in the first place is a much better option. By detecting ailments in the earliest stage possible, a cure is also much more feasible.

Among the illnesses that can be detected by a check-up are the following:-

  • Illnesses related to heart conditions (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity…)
  • Cancer
  • Thyroid problems
  • Bone disease (e.g. osteoporosis)
  • Vascular conditions (e.g. abdominal aortic aneurysms)

One of the reasons that people don’t get around to having that check-up that they should have had ages ago is because of a lack of time owing to their busy, stressful and hectic lifestyle.  However, one cannot and must not forget just how important that check-up could be.

A few days away from work and stress is always a good idea and you could take advantage of the break from your busy routine to get that check-up done as well.  Where better than in the warm, relaxing Canary Islands?
