The Canary Islands, also known as The Garden of Hesperides or The Fortunate Islands, are one of the outermost regions of the European Union and one of the 17 Spanish regions.
The Canary Islands are 100% European, located 62 miles away from the north west coast of Africa and 870 miles away from the Spanish Mainland. They form a link between three continents which is a privileged location and this, together with the solid economic situation, allows excellent quality of life.
Moreover, the islands have the benefit of modern infrastructure and communication networks. They have major city centres, two universities and several research centres, thus contributing to RDI (Research, Development and Innovation.)
Their strategic location as a link between America, Europe and Africa has enriched the Canary Islands with a special culture, having been influenced by different cultures for centuries. This mixture has resulted in Canary Islanders being very open and friendly, of intellectual character and with an innovative spirit.
There are 8 airports, which means the Canaries are the Spanish region with the highest number of airports. Maritime travel and routes are also outstanding since there are sizeable ports for both cruise tourism and business. For instance, Puerto de La Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the most important ports in Europe.
