When to start seeking advice on fertility treatment?

There are ways of maximising your chances of getting pregnant, i.e. eating a healthy diet, cutting down on alcohol, being careful to keep to a healthy weight and getting exercise.  However, if you are under 35 and have been trying to get pregnant for twelve months without success, it is time to seek advice. And, if you are a woman of over 35 and feel you are experiencing fertility problems, you should seek advice after six months of trying to conceive.

The most suitable fertility treatment for you depends on a range of factors and, after tests, your fertility specialist will advise you on the treatment that will give you the best chance of conceiving.

No single fertility treatment is best for everyone. The right treatment obviously depends on a person’s circumstances, taking into account medical history, the cause of the fertility problem, plus the age of the female hoping to conceive.

Broadly speaking, fertility treatments fall into three categories:-

Fertility medicines

These are usually prescribed to women in order to help with ovulation problems.

Surgical procedures

These procedures include fallopian tube surgery which helps when the fallopian tubes, which lead from the ovaries to the uterus (womb), have become blocked or scarred, causing difficulties to conceive.

Assisted reproduction

This includes intrauterine insemination (IUI) which entails sperm being placed into the womb using a fine plastic tube; this can be helpful in cases of mild sperm problems. Assisted conception also takes in IVF (in vitro fertilisation), a procedure during which sperm and eggs are mixed outside the body and put back into the womb.  IVF is favourable for a range of fertility problems, including more severe sperm problems and cases of unexplained infertility.
